Trangia's 27 series offers good stoves for the lone walker/camper or two people. The pans are smaller than the 25 series and the corresponding accessories such as kettles and billy cans are sized accordingly, meaning your Trangia will always pack down as small as possible this ensures it takes up minimal room in a rucksack. The boiling time for one litre of water on a Trangia stove is about 10 minutes in all weather conditions, and this can be reduced by using the frying pan as a lid to retain some of the heat.

The Trangia principle is simple but incredibly effective. The pan is held at the optimum distance over the spirit burner inside a windshield. The windshield protects the burner from the wind but ensures it is well ventilated. All of the heat is directed upwards to the pan, so that minimal energy is wasted.

The principal advantages of a Trangia stove over alternative stoves are:

1/ A Trangia works at any temperature, in any weather. In fact, a Trangia stove works better in windy conditions. If you turn the windshield into the wind, this increases the heat output of the burner.

2/ All the Trangia Storm Cooker Systems and their pans pack neatly into a compact unit, making them easy to transport.

3/ There are no moving parts to break, no jets to clean and no need to pump it up to pressurise it. So you don't have to be an expert mechanic to maintain it.

4/ The Trangia stove is very safe, as it is less prone to flares than pressure stoves and the lower windshield makes a very stable base for the stove to rest on.

5/ The fuel (methylated spirit) is a clean fuel which vapourises quickly without leaving a dirty residue. Methylated spirit is a cleaning fluid whereas paraffin is a dirty fuel.

6/ The Trangia is quick and easy to set up. In a typical backpacking situation, one person can put up the tent while another puts the kettle on. This means that you get a hot drink sooner than with a conventional stove which has to be shielded from the weather.

7/ When compared with pressure stoves, the Trangia stove is cheaper to run and maintain. All spares and accessories are easily available and there are no jets to clean or replace.

In addition, when compared with gas stoves which are increasing in popularity, there is an additional ecological advantage in that there are no metal canisters to dispose of.

Top Tips:

- When securing the burner lid after use, do not tighten it fully. As the metal cools from use it contracts, and this can trap the screw thread of the lid. This can make it extremely difficult to remove the lid the next time you want to use the stove.

- Before placing the pan over a flame, coat the outside of the pan with washing up liquid. This makes it much easier to clean after use.

- The spirit well should only be filled to 2/3 full (approximately 50ml). The burner will burn for about 25 minutes on one fill.
